Key takeaway
Quran 96:15–16 warns: "We will surely drag him by the forelock (nāṣiya), a lying, sinning forelock." The nāṣiya is the front of the head. Neuroscience identifies the prefrontal cortex, just behind the forehead, as central to planning, decision-making, impulse control and the deliberate choice to lie. Many writers see a meaningful link, though the Arabic idiom also has a long-established figurative meaning.
The verses
كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ ١٥ نَاصِيَةٍ كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ ١٦
15 No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock 16 A lying, sinning forelock.
Key Arabic terms
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ٱلنَّاصِيَةِ | al-nāṣiya | the forelock, the hair and front part of the head |
| كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ | kādhibatin khāṭiʾa | lying, sinning (deliberately wrongdoing) |
The verse and the idiom
The passage concerns a man who tried to stop the Prophet ﷺ from praying. In Arabic, "to seize someone by the forelock" means to have complete control over him. The Quran uses the idiom elsewhere: "There is no creature but that He holds it by its forelock [i.e., controls it]" (Quran 11:56). Classical commentators explained "lying, sinning forelock" as a figure of speech in which the forelock stands for its owner.
The prefrontal cortex
The prefrontal cortex, the front part of the frontal lobe, is involved in planning, weighing consequences, regulating behavior and choosing between actions. Functional brain-imaging studies of deliberate lying have repeatedly found extra activity in prefrontal regions, consistent with the effort needed to suppress the truth and construct a falsehood. The famous case of Phineas Gage (1848), whose personality changed after an injury to his frontal lobe, was an early clue to this region's role in behavior.
Balanced assessment
Interpretive A meaningful reflection the verse allows but does not require.
Attributing lying and sin to the front of the head is a striking image in light of the prefrontal cortex's role. Because the forelock idiom has a clear figurative meaning in Arabic, we classify this as interpretive: a meaningful reflection, not a decisive proof.
