The Water Cycle in the Quran (39:21, 23:18, 30:48, 15:22)

Quran 30:48, 15:22, 39:21, 23:18 · · Translation: Saheeh International

Key takeaway

Several Quranic verses together trace the water cycle. Winds stir up clouds and spread them (30:48). Rain is sent down "in a measured amount" and Allah "settled it in the earth" (23:18), making it flow "as springs [and rivers] in the earth" (39:21). Allah sends "the fertilizing winds" and sends down water from the sky (15:22). Modern hydrology confirms that springs and rivers are fed by rainfall that seeps into the ground. That idea was established scientifically only in the 17th century.

The verses

It is Allāh who sends the winds, and they stir the clouds and spread them in the sky however He wills, and He makes them fragments so you see the rain emerge from within them. And when He causes it to fall upon whom He wills of His servants, immediately they rejoice

Do you not see that Allāh sends down rain from the sky and makes it flow as springs [and rivers] in the earth; then He produces thereby crops of varying colors; then they dry and you see them turned yellow; then He makes them [scattered] debris. The verses step by step

  1. Winds raise clouds: Allah sends the winds, "and they stir the clouds and spread them in the sky," and the rain is seen to "emerge from within them" (Quran 30:48).
  2. Fertilizing winds: "We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky" (Quran 15:22). Winds carry pollen to plants, and they also carry the microscopic particles (aerosols) on which cloud droplets form.
  3. Rain in measure, stored underground: "We have sent down rain from the sky in a measured amount and settled it in the earth" (Quran 23:18).
  4. Springs: rain "flow[s] as springs [and rivers] in the earth" (Quran 39:21).

A long-standing scientific puzzle

For centuries many thinkers believed that springs and rivers were fed by an underground ocean or by seawater rising through the earth. Plato's account of a vast underground reservoir is one famous example. The idea that rainfall alone is enough to supply rivers and springs was argued by Bernard Palissy in 1580. Pierre Perrault tested it quantitatively for the Seine basin in 1674 and showed that rainfall exceeds river flow. Today it is basic hydrology: precipitation infiltrates the soil, recharges groundwater in aquifers and emerges again as springs.

Clouds need "seeds"

Cloud droplets do not form in perfectly clean air. Water vapor condenses on tiny particles such as salt, dust and pollen, called cloud condensation nuclei, many of which winds carry. Classical exegetes, citing early authorities, explained lawāqiḥ as winds that "fertilize" the clouds so they carry rain, and that pollinate trees. Both meanings fit what we now know.

Balanced assessment

Strong The Arabic wording directly supports the correspondence, and the fact is well established.

Some ancient writers, including Aristotle, understood parts of the water cycle, such as evaporation and condensation into rain. The Quran's consistent link between rainfall and springs in the earth was still far from universally accepted. It was settled by measurement only in the 1600s. Taken together, these verses describe the cycle coherently and accurately.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Quran describe the water cycle?

Yes. Several verses describe winds raising clouds (30:48), rain sent down in measure and stored in the earth (23:18), and rain flowing as springs (39:21). Together these trace the hydrological cycle.

What are the fertilizing winds in Quran 15:22?

The lawāqiḥ are winds that pollinate plants and, as classical scholars explained, "fertilize" clouds. Science shows that winds carry pollen and the particles on which cloud droplets form.
