Key takeaway
Quran 39:6 says Allah creates human beings "in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, within three darknesses." Classical exegetes, citing early authorities such as Ibn ʿAbbas, explained the three as the darkness of the belly, of the womb and of the placenta or membranes. Anatomically the fetus is enclosed by three protective layers: the abdominal wall, the uterine wall and the amniochorionic membrane.
The verse
He created you from one soul. Then He made from it its mate, and He produced for you from the grazing livestock eight mates. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, within three darknesses. That is Allāh, your Lord; to Him belongs dominion. There is no deity except Him, so how are you averted?

Classical understanding
The well-known commentaries record from the early generation that the three darknesses are the belly (baṭn), the womb (raḥim) and the placenta or caul (mashīma) that surrounds the child. This explanation predates modern anatomy and comes from people observing childbirth.
Anatomy
The developing fetus is enclosed within (1) the anterior abdominal wall, (2) the thick muscular wall of the uterus and (3) the amniochorionic membrane, the fused amnion and chorion, which holds the amniotic fluid. Each layer blocks light and provides protection. "Creation after creation" also fits the continuous, staged nature of fetal development.
Balanced assessment
Moderate A reasonable, accurate correspondence; the words have other valid meanings or the fact was partly known before.
The description is accurate under both the classical and the modern anatomical reading, and the two largely coincide. It does not require knowledge unavailable at the time, since the membranes were seen at birth. It is a precise and correct statement and part of the Quran's broader invitation to reflect on human origins.
Frequently asked questions
