Key takeaway
Quran 57:25 says "We sent down iron, wherein is great military might and benefits for the people." Astrophysics shows that iron is not made on Earth. It forms by nuclear fusion in the cores of massive stars and is scattered through space when they explode as supernovae. Earth's iron was inherited from earlier generations of stars. The verb anzalnā ("We sent down") is also used in the Quran for livestock and clothing, in the sense of "bestowed."
The verse
We have already sent Our messengers with clear evidences and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice. And We sent down iron, wherein is great military might and benefits for the people, and so that Allāh may make evident those who support Him and His messengers unseen. Indeed, Allāh is Powerful and Exalted in Might.
Key Arabic terms
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| وَأَنزَلْنَا ٱلْحَدِيدَ | wa anzalnā al-ḥadīd | "and We sent down iron." Anzala means to send down or to bestow. |
| بَأْسٌ شَدِيدٌ | baʾsun shadīd | "great might," i.e. strength in war |
Where iron comes from
Stars shine by fusing light elements into heavier ones. In massive stars fusion builds up elements step by step to the iron group. Fusing iron does not release energy, so iron accumulates in the core until the star collapses and explodes as a supernova. The explosion scatters iron and other elements into space, where they are later incorporated into new stars and planets. Earth's core is mostly iron and nickel, and iron is also delivered to Earth by meteorites.
The word anzala in the Quran
A careful reader should note that the same verb is used for things that clearly did not fall from space: in Quran 39:6 the Arabic says Allah anzala ("sent down") eight mates of grazing livestock, which Saheeh International renders "He produced for you from the grazing livestock eight mates." Likewise Quran 7:26 says: "We have bestowed (anzalnā) upon you clothing." In these verses the word means that Allah provided or bestowed them. The surah is named al-Ḥadīd ("Iron"), and the verse's focus is iron's usefulness: its strength and its many benefits, alongside revelation and the balance of justice.
Balanced assessment
Interpretive A meaningful reflection the verse allows but does not require.
That iron really does originate beyond Earth is a fascinating fact that harmonizes with the literal sense of "sent down." Because the Quran uses anzala for livestock and clothing too, we cannot claim the verse must refer to cosmic origin. We therefore rate this as interpretive. We also reject popular numerological add-ons, such as claims that the verse number or surah number encodes iron's atomic mass. See Myths & weak claims.
Frequently asked questions
Is iron from outer space?
Iron is produced by nuclear fusion in massive stars and dispersed by supernova explosions. Earth's iron came from earlier stars, and meteorites still bring iron to Earth.
Does 'sent down' in 57:25 prove iron came from space?
Not on its own. The same verb, anzala, is used for livestock (39:6) and clothing (7:26), meaning "bestowed." The cosmic reading is compatible with the verse but not required by it.
