The Byzantine Victory Prophecy and the 'Lowest Land' (Quran 30:2–4)

Quran 30:2–4 · · Translation: Saheeh International

Key takeaway

Surah al-Rum opens: "The Byzantines have been defeated in the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome within three to nine years (biḍʿ sinīn)." At the time, the Persian Sasanian Empire had overrun Byzantine Syria and Jerusalem (614 CE), and recovery seemed impossible. Emperor Heraclius' counter-offensive from 622 ended with a decisive victory at Nineveh in 627. The word adnā means "nearest" and also "lowest," and the region includes the Dead Sea shore, the lowest land on Earth.

The verses

2 The Byzantines have been defeated 3 In the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome 4 Within three to nine years. To Allāh belongs the command [i.e., decree] before and after. And that day the believers will rejoice

Key Arabic terms

ArabicTransliterationMeaning
أَدْنَى ٱلْأَرْضِadnā al-arḍ"the nearest land" (to Arabia); adnā can also mean "the lowest"
بِضْعِ سِنِينَbiḍʿi sinīn"a few years": in Arabic usage, between three and nine

The historical setting

From 602 to 628 CE the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) and Sasanian Persian empires fought one of the longest wars of antiquity. Persia took Antioch and Damascus around 613, captured Jerusalem in 614, and then conquered Egypt. Byzantium seemed close to collapse. The Muslims in Mecca sympathized with the Byzantines as fellow people of scripture, while the pagan Quraysh welcomed Persia's success. Into that situation came the confident prediction of a reversal "within three to nine years."

The fulfillment

Heraclius launched his counter-campaign in 622, the year of the Prophet's ﷺ emigration to Medina. He won repeated victories and defeated the Persian army decisively at the Battle of Nineveh in December 627. A peace in 628 restored Byzantine territory. Within a widely accepted chronology, the reversal came inside the "three to nine years" of the prophecy. Verse 4 adds: "And that day the believers will rejoice." Early sources link this to the Muslims' own victory at Badr (624), which fell within the same years.

"The nearest" or "the lowest" land

Classical exegetes read adnā al-arḍ as "the nearest land" to Arabia and named places in greater Syria. The adjective also carries the meaning "lowest." The Dead Sea basin, in the region where these defeats took place, is the lowest land surface on Earth, at about 430 m below sea level. Some modern writers see a double meaning. Because the exact battle sites are debated, we treat the "lowest land" point as a possible secondary meaning. The prophecy itself is the primary and strongest point.

Balanced assessment

Strong The Arabic wording directly supports the correspondence, and the fact is well established.

This is one of the clearest predictive statements in the Quran. It was made publicly, it was specific about the outcome and timeframe, and it ran against every expectation at the time, and history records its fulfillment. The "lowest point on Earth" reading is linguistically possible and geographically interesting, but secondary.
