Key takeaway
Quran 21:30 states that the heavens and the earth "were a joined entity, and then We separated them." The Arabic pair ratq (sewn or fused together) and fatq (split apart) is widely compared with the Big Bang model, in which all matter and energy began in one hot, dense state about 13.8 billion years ago. Some early commentators read the verse differently, as the sky being "closed" without rain and the earth without plants.
The verse
أَوَلَمْ يَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَـٰهُمَا ۖ وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ حَىٍّ ۖ أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ ٣٠
Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and then We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?
Key Arabic terms
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| رَتْقًا | ratqan | something closed up, sewn or fused together, with no opening |
| فَفَتَقْنَـٰهُمَا | fa-fataqnāhumā | "then We split or tore them apart." Fatq is the opposite of ratq. |
The verse and its two readings
The verse addresses "those who disbelieved" and asks whether they have not considered that the heavens and the earth were ratq and then underwent fatq. Classical exegetes recorded several explanations. One, reported from early authorities, is that the heavens and earth were a single mass that Allah then divided. Another reading, also reported from the early generation, is that the sky was "closed" and gave no rain while the earth was "closed" and grew nothing, and Allah "opened" the sky with rain and the earth with vegetation. That reading fits the verse's mention of water at its end.
The Big Bang model
Modern cosmology describes an early universe in an extremely hot, dense state. It has been expanding and cooling for about 13.8 billion years. The evidence includes the expansion of space, the cosmic microwave background radiation discovered in 1965, and the observed abundances of light elements. On this picture, all the matter that now forms galaxies, stars and planets, including Earth, shared a common origin before structure formed.
"From water every living thing"
The same verse adds that Allah "made from water every living thing." Water makes up most of the mass of living cells. Every known life form needs liquid water, and the search for life beyond Earth is guided by the principle "follow the water." See our page on water and the origin of life.
Balanced assessment
Moderate A reasonable, accurate correspondence; the words have other valid meanings or the fact was partly known before.
The image of a fused whole that was later split is strikingly compatible with a common origin for all matter, and many readers find the parallel compelling. The verse does not describe a singularity, expansion or timescale, and the "rain and vegetation" reading is old and respectable. We present this as a meaningful parallel, not a technical description of the Big Bang. Scientific models are also refined over time, while the Quranic text stays fixed. That is one reason careful scholars avoid tying the meaning of a verse to one theory.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Quran mention the Big Bang?
The Quran does not use scientific terminology, but 21:30 says the heavens and earth were a joined entity (ratq) that Allah then separated (fatq). Many see this as consistent with the Big Bang's common origin of all matter.
What does ratq mean in Arabic?
Ratq means something closed, sewn or fused together without a gap. Its opposite, fatq, means to split or tear apart.
